Let’s talk about your cycle—not just in terms of symptoms or fertility charts, but as a built-in, beautifully orchestrated rhythm that offers insight, feedback, and a chance to actually slow down.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), menstruation is considered a vital time for restoration. When we ignore it, push through it, or try to out-hustle our hormones, our bodies notice. But when we honor it—intentionally, gently, and consistently—it becomes a powerful act of long-term care.
Here are five rituals I personally love (and recommend often) for supporting your body during your period—without adding anything fussy or overcomplicated.
1. Candlelight Check-In
Before you scroll or start your to-do list, try this: light a candle, sit for 3–5 minutes, and ask yourself, “How am I really feeling today?”
This ritual doesn’t need to be poetic or perfect—it just creates space to tune in. Some days you’ll find clarity. Other days, you’ll just enjoy the glow. Both are valuable.
Tip: Choose a scent that supports the moment—lavender for calm, mugwort for grounding, citrus for uplift.
2. Warm the Womb
One of my favorite TCM principles is that the uterus loves warmth. If you’re cramping, feeling cold, or emotionally raw, try a heat pack or castor oil compress over the lower abdomen. Think of it like giving your womb a hug.
Bonus points if you pair this with a cozy blanket and herbal tea.
3. Tea as Medicine
This is your Doctor's note to make tea a ritual—not just a beverage. Choose an herbal tea that nourish and warm the body during this yin-depleting phase: ginger, cinnamon, red raspberry leaf, or goji berry.
And yes, you can absolutely romanticize it with a favorite mug and a slice of orange peel floating on top.
4. Breath First, To-Do List Later
Before jumping into the day, take 3–5 slow, intentional belly breaths. It doesn’t have to be formal breathwork—just a reset. In TCM, the Liver meridian governs the smooth flow of Qi, and when we’re stressed or stagnant, it’s the first to call us out, often using physical and emotional signs like indigestion and irritability.
Breathe in, soften your shoulders. Breathe out, unclench your jaw.
5. Journal Without Rules
Some days, journaling looks like a deep emotional release. Other days, it’s a bulleted list of what you’re done tolerating. It can even just be a simple doodle. Either way, writing during your cycle is a beautiful way to track emotional patterns, shifts in energy, and signals from your body.
Pro tip: keep your journal and candle in the same spot—it helps create an effortless ritual.
This isn’t about doing more—it’s about being more present. Even one of these rituals can change how you experience your cycle, and over time, they stack into something pretty powerful.
Because yes, honoring your period can actually feel good. Maybe even sacred.
And that’s the whole point, isn’t it?
